Planning
When planning a piece I always start with a rough sketch of whatever idea is floating around in my head. These often stem from music I’ve listened to, and the emotions that are brought forth from the songs. I make sure to write down the exact feel I want the work to have when it’s completed, and what other meanings I believe people could find in it. Once I’ve fully decided on the energy the artwork should have, and created the perfect playlist to listen to while making it, I finalize the sketch and get to work.
Process
Although the process of creation varies slightly based on media, the general idea remains the same. I always listen to a playlist created to match the energy of the piece I’m working on, to make sure I stay in the appropriate headspace. When creating a work I often work in large chunks of time, often carving out whole days to solely focus on the piece. The less distractions there are the more clearly the meaning of an artwork will show through.
Purpose
One of the most incredible things about art is how it connects people. No matter where someone is, or what language they speak, I can reach them through my work, and be touched by their’s. Art is a universal form of communication, and I feel so honored to be able to use it. There is more information in my artist statement, but my main goal when creating artwork is to help people feel something. Whether it’s the emotion that I feel when creating the piece, or something entirely different, every emotion that people attribute to the work adds to its story. Everyone who sees each piece is a part of it, connecting us all in a beautiful web of shared experiences.
